Atlanta "Library Dads" build community by helping kids fall in love with reading

Atlanta’s “Library Dads” are building community by bringing fathers and kids together around books, story time, and play. The group grew out of Khari Arnold’s habit of taking his daughter to the library, then inviting other dads to join in, and it has since expanded into a broader brotherhood focused on literacy and fatherhood.

How it started

Arnold began the idea when his daughter was just a baby, and the routine of reading together turned into a bigger mission. He said the goal was to help dads learn how to bond with their children through books and library visits while creating a supportive network for fathers.

What they do

The group’s main gathering is a “Library Link-up,” where dads and children spend time together, play, and then explore books. The program is designed to make reading feel fun and natural so kids build early literacy habits at home too.

Why it matters

The idea is resonating because it tackles both childhood literacy and dad isolation at the same time. Members say the events show kids that fathers are present and involved, while also helping families connect with other families in the community.
