8 Children Dead After Father Goes On Shooting Spree In Louisiana

A father reportedly killed eight children in a mass shooting in Shreveport, Louisiana, in what police described as a domestic disturbance that turned deadly. Reports say seven of the victims were his own children, and two adult women were also critically injured before the suspect was later killed in a police confrontation.

What happened

Authorities said the shooting began around 5 a.m. and unfolded across multiple locations, including one home where the children were found. Police identified the suspect as Shamar Elkins, and family members told reporters he had been going through a separation and struggling with mental health issues.

Why it matters

The case has been described as one of the deadliest shootings in the U.S. in recent years, and it has left the Shreveport community reeling. It also highlights the overlap of domestic violence, firearms access, and mental health crises in mass-casualty incidents.

What officials said

Police said the attack appeared to be carried out by one person, and they are still reviewing how the events unfolded. Reports also note that at least one child survived after jumping from a roof, and others were hospitalized with injuries.
