6-Year-Old Girl Found Safe After Getting Lost In Woods

A family’s worst fears turned into a moment of overwhelming relief after a 6-year-old Michigan girl was found safe following a hours-long search in the woods.

Payton had been at her great-grandmother’s home in rural Little Lake, Michigan, when she wandered away after following the family dogs. What began as an ordinary evening quickly became a massive search involving law enforcement, firefighters, search-and-rescue teams, K-9 units and drones.

A Search Through the Night

Payton disappeared shortly after 7:30 p.m., prompting her family to immediately search the surrounding property before calling 911.

Emergency crews were dispatched around 8:25 p.m. and began searching the wooded area near County Road 456 and Setter Drive. Multiple agencies joined the effort, including the Forsyth Township Police and Fire departments, the Marquette County Sheriff's Office, Michigan State Police and specialized K-9 and drone teams.

The search continued for several hours as rescuers worked through the darkness.

A Trail Camera Provided the Breakthrough

The crucial break came when a family member received an alert from a private trail camera located roughly a half-mile from where Payton had disappeared.

The camera had captured an image of the little girl moving through the woods. Search teams immediately shifted toward the area near Ski Hill Road and began closing in on her location.

Just before 12:15 a.m., rescuers finally found Payton.

She was sitting in the woods alongside one of the family dogs and was in good condition.

“She Was Not Scared”

Michigan State Police Trooper Aaron Griffin, one of the first responders to reach Payton, said the little girl appeared remarkably calm when they found her.

When he asked if she had been scared, she reportedly answered, “Nope.”

Her family said Payton had followed the dogs because she did not want them to get lost.

After hours of uncertainty, the reunion with her parents brought an emotional end to the search.

Payton’s mother, Tiana Sicotte, described the moment as an enormous relief after spending hours not knowing where her daughter was.

A Lesson She Won’t Forget

Although Payton was safely reunited with her family, the experience left her with an important lesson.

The 6-year-old later spoke with Inside Edition about what happened and what she learned from her unexpected adventure in the woods.

For her family, the frightening experience also underscored how quickly a child can disappear from sight — and how important it is to immediately seek help when a child goes missing.

A Community Comes Together

The successful rescue was made possible by a coordinated effort involving numerous first responders and search teams.

K-9 teams, drones, aviation personnel and local emergency crews all played roles in searching the area. A trail camera ultimately gave rescuers the information they needed to narrow the search and bring Payton home.

What began as a terrifying night ended with a little girl safely back in her parents’ arms — and one unforgettable reminder to stay close when adventure takes you beyond the backyard.
