Two Suspects Charged After Two Boys, Ages 12 and 14, Fatally Shot in Northeast D.C.

Two men have been charged in connection with a fatal shooting that claimed the lives of two young boys in Northeast Washington, D.C., earlier this year. Investigators believe the children may have been targeted because of the neighborhood they came from, rather than their individual identities.

The victims, 12-year-old Mhilo Young and 14-year-old Tyale Coates, were shot on April 14 while near a convenience store on Kenilworth Avenue NE during spring break. The case remained under investigation for months before authorities announced the arrests.

Two Suspects Face Murder Charges

Authorities identified the suspects as Antonio Terry, 18, and Markell Woodings, 20. Terry was arrested on October 25 and charged with first-degree murder while armed. Woodings was arrested the following day and also faces murder charges.

Terry appeared in court and was ordered held without bond while awaiting further proceedings. His next hearing was scheduled for November 9. Information about Woodings’ court schedule was not immediately available in the initial reports.

Both defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Investigators Believe the Boys Were Caught in Neighborhood Retaliation

According to court documents, three masked individuals allegedly arrived in a stolen black Honda Accord, got out of the vehicle, opened fire in the parking lot, and fled.

Investigators believe the shooting may have been retaliation connected to tensions between neighborhoods. Officials said the boys appear to have been caught up in the dispute because of where they were from, rather than because they were the specific intended targets.

Police credited community information, witness accounts, video and forensic evidence with helping move the investigation forward. Authorities continued searching for another potential suspect as the case developed.

Community Mourns the Loss of Two Young Lives

Young and Coates had ties to KIPP DC Valor Academy. The school community expressed grief over the loss of the two children, remembering them as cherished members of its community.

The case has renewed concerns about gun violence affecting children and families in Washington, D.C. As the legal proceedings continue, investigators are working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the shooting and determine who else may have been involved.
