The history of Levi's

As the United States approaches its 250th birthday, one of its most enduring brands is also celebrating a legacy that spans more than 170 years: Levi Strauss & Co..

How it all began

Levi Strauss founded the company in 1853 after moving to San Francisco during the California Gold Rush. Initially, he sold dry goods and supplies to miners and settlers.

In 1873, Strauss partnered with tailor Jacob Davis to patent riveted work pants—a design that became the world's first blue jeans. The metal rivets reinforced stress points, making the pants especially durable for laborers.

A symbol of American culture

Over the decades, Levi's evolved from rugged workwear into a global fashion staple. The brand has been embraced by:

  • Miners and ranchers.

  • Soldiers and factory workers.

  • Hollywood stars.

  • Musicians and artists.

  • Generations of everyday Americans.

The iconic 501® jeans remain one of the company's best-known products.

Lasting influence

Today, Levi's is recognized around the world for:

  • Classic denim craftsmanship.

  • Timeless American style.

  • Innovation in sustainable manufacturing.

  • A lasting influence on fashion and popular culture.

Its history mirrors much of America's own story—from westward expansion and industrial growth to modern global fashion.

Bottom line

Founded during the Gold Rush, Levi Strauss & Co. helped invent the blue jean and grew into one of America's most recognizable brands. As the nation nears its 250th anniversary, Levi's continues to represent a blend of history, craftsmanship, and enduring American style.
