Just one day after making history on the Miss America stage, Regan Hutsell is opening up about her life-changing victory and what she hopes to accomplish during her year as Miss America 2027.

The Texas beauty queen appeared live on Good Morning America on Sept. 7, shortly after being crowned the 99th Miss America at the national competition in West Palm Beach, Florida. Hutsell spoke about the whirlwind of emotions surrounding her win and the responsibility that comes with wearing the crown.

A Historic Victory for Texas

Hutsell, who represented Texas, defeated contestants from across the country and U.S. territories to claim the coveted title. Her victory marks the first time in more than 50 years that Texas has produced a Miss America winner.

The Houston native is also the fourth Miss Texas to win the national title and the 10th Black woman to earn the Miss America crown.

She succeeds Miss America 2026 Cassie Donegan, who crowned Hutsell during Sunday's ceremony.

Making History With Her Natural Hair

Hutsell's win was significant for another reason: She became the first Miss America to be crowned while wearing her natural hair.

For Hutsell, the decision was about more than appearance. She has spoken about wanting young women to see themselves represented and feel comfortable embracing who they are.

"I didn't know what I was going to do with my hair," Hutsell previously told PEOPLE, explaining that she had once straightened her hair and struggled with the effects. Ultimately, she chose to compete with her natural curls.

She hopes that visibility will encourage other young girls to recognize that they do not have to change themselves to fit someone else's idea of beauty.

More Than a Crown

Hutsell's journey to the Miss America stage also includes significant personal challenges. She has openly discussed her recovery from an eating disorder and has used her platform, "Your Body Is Your Home," to promote healthier self-image and positive self-talk.

A trained dancer, Hutsell previously performed with professional dance organizations and was a Radio City Rockette at just 18 years old. During the Miss America competition, she performed a jazz dance for the talent portion.

Her background in performance has also prepared her for the demanding schedule ahead, which will include traveling, public appearances and advocacy work throughout her reign.

A New Year of Service Begins

Hutsell will receive a $50,000 scholarship as part of her Miss America victory. She has already earned nearly $90,000 in scholarships through her participation in the Miss America program.

But the new titleholder has made it clear that her year will be about more than the financial prize or the spotlight.

She wants to use the visibility that comes with the crown to encourage women and girls to embrace their individuality, overcome difficult moments and pursue their goals.

Looking Ahead

Now that the excitement of the competition is beginning to settle, Hutsell is preparing for what promises to be a busy year.

Her appearance on Good Morning America gave viewers an early glimpse of the woman behind the new crown — a performer, student, advocate and Texan who says authenticity will be central to her reign.

After years of Texas coming close to the Miss America title, Hutsell has finally brought the crown back to the Lone Star State. Now, she has a full year ahead to decide what kind of legacy she will leave behind.
