Laguna Beach 'Karen' Interrupts Proposal With Racist Outburst
Emmanuel Banuelos had spent weeks planning the perfect surprise for his girlfriend, Hayley Lugos. He chose a scenic spot at Crescent Bay Point Park, arranged a mariachi band and set up a romantic display of white roses and candles.
But just as the proposal was about to happen, a woman walking her dog confronted the group and began shouting at them. The encounter was captured on video by Hayley’s sister, who had been hired to record the special moment.
“Go Back to Mexico”
In the footage, the woman can be heard arguing that the park was for local residents and claiming that police were coming because the group did not have a permit.
As the mariachi band began playing and Banuelos approached Hayley, the confrontation escalated.
The woman shouted, “Go back to Mexico,” before continuing with a series of racist insults.
The couple was left stunned by the encounter, which unfolded just moments before Banuelos got down on one knee.
The Proposal Still Happened
Despite the interruption, Banuelos continued with his plan.
He proposed to Hayley as the mariachi band played, and she said yes.
The couple later returned to Ontario, where Banuelos had planned a surprise engagement party to continue celebrating the milestone.
Hayley said the woman's comments were deeply upsetting, but she also hoped the viral video would bring attention to the persistence of racism.
Millions Have Seen the Video
Hayley’s sister, Trinity Lugos, shared the footage online after the incident because she believed the woman's behavior should be held accountable.
The video quickly spread across social media, collecting more than 10 million views and sparking widespread reactions to the confrontation.
For Hayley, seeing the incident go viral has been bittersweet.
She said she hopes people watching the footage understand that hateful behavior should not be tolerated.
Was the Proposal Allowed?
The confrontation also raised questions about whether the couple actually needed a permit for the proposal.
A spokesperson for the City of Laguna Beach said the city's parks and beaches are open to everyone, but certain planned setups and professional photography require permits. The city also said proposals involving setups and structures are subject to specific rules.
Banuelos said he did not believe a permit was necessary because the person recording the proposal was a family member and the group did not use amplified sound or temporary structures.
According to the family, the entire setup, proposal and cleanup took less than an hour. Police ultimately did not arrive at the scene.
A Moment They Won’t Forget
What was supposed to be an intimate celebration became something the couple never expected.
Still, Banuelos and Hayley refused to let the confrontation take away from their engagement.
Their proposal went ahead, the mariachi band continued playing and the couple got the moment they had dreamed about — even if it came with an ugly interruption they are unlikely to forget.
For Hayley, the hope is that the attention surrounding the video ultimately sends a message that there is no place for racism or hate in moments meant to bring people together.
