Billy Porter Shares Update After Near-Fatal Sepsis Battle
The Emmy Award-winning actor and singer spoke with E! News while attending Christian Siriano’s Spring/Summer 2027 show during New York Fashion Week, where he reflected on his recovery and his return to work after the frightening medical emergency.
Porter revealed late last year that he had been hospitalized with urosepsis, a severe infection that can become life-threatening when it spreads into the bloodstream.
A Life-Threatening Health Scare
Porter’s health crisis forced him to step away from the stage while he recovered. The actor had been starring in the Broadway revival of Cabaret but withdrew after developing the serious infection.
The experience was particularly frightening because sepsis can cause the body's immune response to an infection to trigger widespread inflammation and organ damage.
Porter has since described the experience as a major turning point, saying he is grateful to be on the other side of it and able to continue doing what he loves.
Back in the Spotlight
His appearance at Siriano’s NYFW show is another sign of Porter’s return to the public eye.
The actor has long shared a close creative relationship with Siriano, who has designed some of Porter’s most memorable red-carpet looks. Porter was among the celebrities attending Siriano’s latest runway presentation, which drew inspiration from the romance and fantasy of 18th-century France.
After facing such a serious health setback, simply being back at fashion events and working again carries a different meaning for Porter.
A Career Built on Resilience
Porter has remained one of entertainment’s most recognizable performers, moving between Broadway, television, music and film.
He won a Tony Award for his performance as Lola in Kinky Boots and made history in 2019 when he became the first openly gay Black man to win the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Pray Tell on Pose.
His recovery has now added another deeply personal chapter to a career defined by perseverance.
Looking Ahead
While the sepsis battle temporarily forced Porter to slow down, his return to the stage and public events suggests he is continuing to rebuild his routine.
At Siriano’s show, Porter appeared focused on the present — supporting a longtime fashion collaborator and reconnecting with an industry he has remained such a visible part of for years.
After coming through a health crisis he once described as nearly fatal, Porter’s latest update offers fans a reassuring message: he is recovering, moving forward and finding his way back to the spotlight.
