Aaron Rodgers is speaking publicly about his relationship with Shailene Woodley for the first time in years — and his account of what led to their broken engagement is drawing plenty of attention.

During a candid appearance on the Not Just Football with Cam Heyward podcast, the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback claimed Woodley asked to sleep with another man shortly after he proposed and before they were supposed to get married.

Rodgers also pushed back against the idea that he was responsible for the emotional pain Woodley has previously described following their breakup, insisting that, from his perspective, she was the one who ultimately ended the relationship.

Rodgers' Account of the Engagement

Rodgers said he proposed to Woodley in December 2020 and that she accepted.

According to his account, however, the relationship began falling apart soon afterward.

Rodgers claimed that only days after the proposal, Woodley told him she wanted to sleep with another man before they got married.

He said the revelation was a turning point in their relationship and disputed the public narrative surrounding their eventual breakup.

Rodgers said Woodley eventually removed her engagement ring by March 2021 and that the pair made several attempts to reconcile afterward.

'There Wasn't Even a Relationship in 2022'

Rodgers strongly disputed the idea that he abandoned Woodley in 2022.

“Her story is that I ruined her life and gave her crazy depression because I left her,” Rodgers said, according to reports on the podcast. He argued that the timeline was very different from the way the breakup has sometimes been portrayed publicly.

He said the couple attempted to reunite but ultimately never restored their relationship.

“There wasn’t even a relationship in ’22 to break off,” Rodgers said, adding that Woodley had told him she did not want to be with him.

The couple's split was publicly confirmed in February 2022, although reports at the time indicated they briefly reconciled before separating again later that year.

Woodley Previously Described a Difficult Period

Woodley has spoken about the emotional toll of 2022 without publicly addressing Rodgers' latest allegations.

In a 2024 interview with Outside, the actress said she experienced what she described as a deeply traumatic event in early 2022 and said she came to understand depression and anxiety in a profound way.

She also described her relationship with Rodgers as something that was “not right” but “beautiful,” while declining to discuss many of the private details.

In another 2024 interview, Woodley reflected on having experienced a broken heart and said she had learned not to take responsibility for fixing or healing another person within a relationship.

She has not publicly responded to Rodgers' latest comments.

Rodgers Says the Public Narrative Is Wrong

Rodgers said he decided to discuss the relationship because he believes there are stories about his past relationships that do not accurately reflect what happened.

“There’s just a lot of narratives out there that are just not true,” he said, according to reports.

The 42-year-old quarterback also criticized the attention his former relationships continue to receive, saying he believes some of his ex-partners have used his name when discussing their own experiences.

His comments also addressed his previous relationship with retired NASCAR driver Danica Patrick, who has previously described that relationship in negative terms. Rodgers disputed her characterization as well.

Both Have Moved On

Rodgers and Woodley began dating in 2020 and became one of Hollywood and sports' most talked-about couples before their engagement was announced publicly in 2021.

Rodgers has since married a woman named Brittani, whom he first met in 2017. The couple reunited years later and quietly married in 2025. Rodgers has described not proposing to her when they first met as one of his biggest regrets.
