McDonald's is phasing out self-serve soda machines, and the internet isn't happy

The move by McDonald’s to phase out self-serve soda fountains across its U.S. locations is sparking strong reactions online, with many customers expressing frustration over losing one of the chain’s most familiar conveniences.

The change, which has been rolling out gradually since its announcement in 2023, is expected to be fully completed by 2032.

What’s changing

McDonald’s is removing self-serve beverage stations from dining areas and shifting to a model where:

  • Drinks are prepared behind the counter by staff

  • Customers request refills instead of pouring them themselves

  • Beverage service is standardized across dine-in, drive-thru, app, and delivery orders

The company says the goal is to create a more consistent experience and improve cleanliness, efficiency, and operational control.
