McDonald's debuts its own version of 'refresher' drinks

McDonald’s is rolling out its own version of “refresher” drinks as part of a bigger beverage push, with fruit-forward options and “crafted sodas” set to hit menus nationwide in May. Reported items include drinks like a Mango Pineapple Refresher and Dirty Dr Pepper, with McDonald’s aiming to compete more directly with Starbucks, Sonic, Dunkin’, and Dutch Bros.

What’s coming

The new lineup appears to mix soda, lemonade, fruit flavors, syrups, and in some cases foam or other customization. CBS says energy drinks are also planned later this year, so this is more than a one-off seasonal test.

Why McDonald’s is doing it

This is part of McDonald’s effort to build what it calls a “new era of beverages,” leaning into fast-growing drink trends and higher-margin menu items. The company has already been experimenting with beverage innovation through its broader McCafé and CosMc’s-inspired strategy.

What it means for customers

For customers, the key change is variety. Instead of only fountain sodas, McDonald’s wants to offer more customizable, trendy drinks that feel closer to the specialty beverage category.
